How to upgrade Smartermail 15.x to 16.x

Upgrade of kinds

There are 2 kinds of upgrade on Smartermail. Minor upgrade and Major upgrade.

  1. Example minor upgrade: Upgrading the Smartermail version 15.1 to 15.3 or upgrading version 16.1 to 16.6.
  2. Example major upgrade: Upgrading the Smartermail version 14.x to 15.x or upgrading 15.x to 16.x.

In this case, upgrading 15.x to 16.x.

Backup Current Version

Before upgrade, make sure you backup every single file of Smartermail installation / configuration file. This can be found below. Make sure you copy all the files to different folder path.

C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\
C:\SmarterMail

Stop IIS

1. Most of Smartermail will run under IIS. Go to your IIS and stop Smartermail webserver.
2. Make sure to stop Smartermail service under services.msc as well.

Uninstall Smartermail

Now uninstall the current Smartermail version from Programs and Features in Control Panel. NOTE: You can not proceed to upgrade before UNINSTALL current version. Refer to vendor, All configuration data and email will be preserved after uninstalling the program file.

The uninstallation only removing some core parts and features files, but not mailbox or configurations.

Download Latest Software

Download latest software from here: https://smartertools.com/smartermail/downloads.html#/smartermail/14/downloads Proceed to install.

NOTE:
Some file components will be ask to be installed. Just click OK and proceed the requirements installation.

Configure the Installation

When proceed installation, you will be prompted for some settings as follows. Basically we just need to reconfigure and set the IIS as previous settings.

Done, the installation is complete.

Reactivate License

Now we need to login as admin reactivate the license. As default settings, all licenses will be set to FREE edition with 10 Mailbox MAX. We need to reactivate it.

A license page interface will be opened, make sure you click Reactivate and wait for some minutes. Then the license is updated as below.

Verify The Domains Folder

Before go further, we need to check some configuration as usually all the installations and logs goes to C:\ and the mailbox file goes to D:\ Now we need to verify see if the configuration is override or no.

Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail\Service open file domainList.xml with Notepad. Make sure the configuration file is correct. The mailbox should be written to C:\.

NOTE: Some server configuration is set to 2 partition, where C: is small partition used to store logs and file configuration and D: where contained big partition and used to store mailbox files. However, some server also placed 1 partition (C: only) to store the logs and mailbox configuration.

Test Send & Receive

Then test send & receive email.
If all okay then you good.

Start Webmail Service

Make sure you Open Start > Search > Type: service.msc
Make sure World Wide Web Publishing Service is started.

And start Smartermail web server from IIS (previously stopped).

Verify telnet

Verify telnet to some ports on all IPs to make sure all of them is working.
